Backup Win server 08 onto Solaris

Greetings fellows,

So, we have a Win8 server which is a profile server; its main purpose is to have a shared disc called Homes for roaming profiles. We want to create a backup, and copy files from this "Homes" drive onto SOlaris. We have read we could do it with rsync. Another engineer, recommended us to mount the drive "Homes" onto Solaris and then we could schedule rsync to pull data from "Homes".

Apart from the first paragraph, then we want to stash the data from another server (Solaris too) into the previously mentioned Windows server for additional safekeeping, at least until we get a tape-solution.

At the moment, the first part is what matter the most to us, does anybody think this is right? does anybody have any advice/commands or help on how to perform this?

You might be better off with a shadow Windows profile server, as some outages are not fixed with a restore. Keeping them in sync is a different problem, especially as you do not want anything that kills one to be copied to the other.

Network delay is less if the windows system backs up onto a solaris resident disk using zip, as files go over the net compressed. Alternately, you could zip up the entire image and send the zip off using scp or whatever. Each zip would be a revision you roll back down to. WIndows lets you preuse zip like dir, too.
