Alternative Scripting Language for UNIX/Linux System Administration

I do not know UNIX shell scripting so as an alternative which language would you think is better for daily System Administration tasks. Perl or PHP? I know a little about both.

Perl or Python

I use PHP for most daily sys-admin tasks.

The choice between Perl or PHP is personal, both are great! I used to program in Perl, but swiched to PHP for these types of tasks. I guess the reason is that it is easy for me to integrate PHP into web-based apps, the forums, word press, and other Internet apps.

PHP makes a very good general purpose scripting language and does not have to be used for just web based applications.

On the other hand, Perl is a great choice as well. So is Python. I just happen to like PHP these days!

Among the languages being discussed, perl would be my choice. But I feel that a system administrator must know shell programming. You will be at a disadvantage unless you learn shell. So that is my suggestion to you...learn shell scripting first.
