If your question is to know the list of distros, I say count goes on increasing. But the Best way to differentiate is by package management.

  1. Debian based. packages are installed using .deb files. It uses very powerful package management tool. I suppose to be the best and easy to use as it manages dependencies as well. Various Distros include : Debian, Ubuntu, Knoppix and many more.
  2. rpm based. These use .rpm files. Very easy to install and use. Various Distros include: Redhat, Fedora, Opensuse, Mandriva, Centos and many more.

Many Companies have their own versions of linux as well. Ex: Solaris, HP-UX etc.

If you wanna kickstart go ahead with Fedora (rpm) or Debian. Ubuntu will be way too easy to use.

Ubuntu allows a new user to get up faster, but openSUSE
Is a much more flexible version.
