AIX on desktop PC

Hi,

Apologize if the information has been posted on a previous thread. Tried to google this forum and the search engine but could not find the information I was looking for.

I'm trying to learn AIX. Although, there are a lot many books on the web, but a hands on approach is always the best.

Is there any way I can install the AIX OS on my PC?

Thanks

dsids,

I saw before one of the AIX e-learning ( simulation of AIX box).Maybe you can research about that. With regaqrds to install I think you cant install the AIX (virtualize the AIX) on a desktop, as it works only on the IBM hardware. I tried installing HP-UX in a (virtual desktop) it doesnt work.

What csorhand says is correct: AIX will not run on PC hardware and i do not know of any emulation software.

You could still find a good used rs/6000 or P-Series machine for relatively little money. They are offered on ebay and some other resellers. "used rs/6000 buy" brings a lot of links. Here is - just as an example - a link for a germany-based reseller (prices are in Euro): GALL Sonderangebote

Just to make it clear: this company is - not to my knowledge - any special in any way, i just happened to know their name.

I hope this helps.

Short answer, no way, and no such thing.

only simulator for power system is for PowerPC 970, but still, AIX does not support this cpu.

If you just wanna learn some Unix, Linux, Solaris, or even Cywin on your desktop. For play with AIX box, there're 3 or maybe 4 choices,
1.search to find out some free online practice machines to get a user account, most of them are not reliable.

2.buy a 44p-170 workstation, it's can run up to 64bit AIX5.3. it'll only cost you under $300--less than a used PC. You can even buy two for learning HACMP.

3.buy a 9114-275 workstation, it's can run up to AIX 6.1, but due to be a workstation, you can not run PowerVM or any of IBM virtualization function. this might cost you 300-600,still cheaper than a laptop.

4.buy any used P5 or P6 server, you can play most advanced fancy stuff of AIX, even new AIX6.1 EE. but this can cost you at least US$1k-2k for now, also you have to get a HMC (yep, maybe we can run HMC on VMware just for learning purpose), to control the server.

Cheapest resource is $bay.

Really appreaciate all the help.

Actually, I am in India. Really cant go in for any thing on ebay, nor can I afford to buy any hardware to run Aix..

Guess, google is the best resource...

Thanks

Someone on another forum post mentioned Polarhome - gateway to freedom
This is an inexpensive hosting service that offers AIX shell access.
