About the FreeBSD-CURRENT category

A complement to things such as the official freebsd-current mailing list. Participants should — please — also follow list content.

Posts should:

  1. be strictly technical
  2. follow the rules
  3. relate to CURRENT.

Branches, support, updates — distinguishing between CURRENT, STABLE, and RELEASE

CURRENT is from the fast-moving main branch. FreeBSD 15.0-CURRENT at present. Official support is limited — no mention at https://www.freebsd.org/security/#sup, and so on.

STABLE gains merges from CURRENT (MFCs). Three branches active at present: stable/12, stable/13, stable/14.

Updates to CURRENT and STABLE are either built then installed from source, or installed using PkgBase.

Each RELEASE of FreeBSD is the end result of periodic special attention – release engineering – to a releng branch. Active at present:

  • releng/12.4
  • releng/13.2
  • releng/14.0

FreeBSD 14.0-RELEASE is expected to arrive in November 2023, and will be recommended for new deployments.
