Safe to use raidctl to update LSI SAS card firmware?

I have a workstation with a couple of LSI cards, the LSI SAS 3080X-R and 3801X, which are 3 Gb/s PCI-X SAS controllers. I understand that raidctl -F can be used to update the firmware. However, has anybody ever tried this? Is it safe?

In addition, if you look at LSI's (Broadcom's) sas2flash updater for x86, it takes two files, a bios and a firmware. Both are updated together. However, the raidctl manual page says that it can update firmware and bios, but there is no way to specify which file is firmware and which is bios.

Since I can find so little information about using raidctl to update firmware, I am hesitant to try it. Has anybody given it a go?
