I am working on a community college certification in programming and have a choice of specialization in Java ,Visual Basic ,or Visual C++. I am curious to know what specialization would be best for the current job market and increase my earning potential? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!!
It's not popular, but I will say Visual Basic. With the trend of .NET converging on a single run-time, VB.NET should perform the same as VisualC++.NET.
I am the only person that I know of in this area that isn't using a Microsoft language (ActiveState Perl, which probably has benefited from some Microsoft $$$).
At the large e-commerce site that I work at, 95% of the components are VB with 5% being Visual C++.
What school are you going to for this Certification?
I am a studen at Richland Community College Continuing Ed. Dept. I am impressed with the programs they have going ,plus they offer alot of courses you just can't find anywhere else at affordable prices. Plus ,keep in mind that since it is a community college there are more options for funding!!
I understand completely and recommend Community Colleges for training purposes.
I just finished Linear Algebra there this past semester.
Richland Community College actually offers an Associate Degree in Unix. It's true, look it up.

If I would have done more of my homework maybe I could have started earlier on an associates degree. I kinda want to kick myself now ,but that's how the ball bounces! Anyways ,I took some Continuing Ed. Unix courses and they're really worth it. Also, I am working on my Sun Certification but want to get into some programming also. If you have any good leads let me know!
