Installing UNIX with no cd or floppy

I have an complicated problem to solve. I want to install a basic UNIX installation on a Compaq LTE 5280 (Win 95). The floppy drive does not work, and there is no cd-rom. It has a 14.4 modem, and I have dial-up internet. I also have another computer (Win 98) with a floppy drive, cd drive, and dial-up internet that i can link to via a null-modem serial cable. I am wondering if anyone can reccomend:

  • A UNIX distribution to use
  • How to install it
    and
  • How long it will take
    :confused::confused::confused:
    If anyone could help with this interesting problem, I would appreciate it very much.:smiley:

UNIX'es usually won't run since only some have an x386 version. What you might want is Linux. Plenty of info on the web about it - maybe check for Ubuntu.

What's left? Network? USB?

No one can say that - depends on your installation media and which problems you encounter at the installation.
With a 14.4 kbit modem you better get a Linux distribution on CD-Rom.

I'd take a look at DSL DSL information. Can you barrow the CDROM from the other machine to do the install?

You can grab hard drive, install it into another box, create speparate partition, set up "Live-CD" there and make sure that HD is bootable now.
Then put it back and isntall.
