Could you please let me know, if it is possible to have NIM server running on one volume group and other applications like oracle running on other volume group. Do we need to have a dedicated server for only AIX NIM server?. I am new to AIX and planning to install NIM server on a test server. which has oracle database running on it. we have one unused disk on the server. so we are planning to create a volume group on the disk and install NIM Server on this volume group. Does it has any effect on the oracle server running on the server.
Do we need licenses for installing NIM server or we can download NIM filesets from IBM site.
Hi,
your plan will work, you can install NIM on the same server as your Oracle DB for testing purpose. The only impact on your DB should be that the same ressources are used, which could impact your performance.
If you want to use NIM in your production you should use a dedicated server.
You do not need a separate license for NIM. The SW is included on your AIX DVD'S.
Your proposed method would work however it's recommended practice to have NIM as a standalone in your environment as a MASTER / CLIENT relationship.
You won't need a separate license for your server but ensure you have the DVD available so you can create your LPP sources etc. Also to turn your existing server into a "NIM" server you will need to install the 2 required bos.nim filesets as recommended by IBM.
Here is a link that may help you in setting up your NIM: NIM from A to Z in AIX 5L
Hope this helps! Let us know!
You can run NIM on any LPAR you want, you just need to make sure that the nim.master fileset is installed, its on the AIX install media.
HOWEVER, the NIM master always needs to be at the latest level of AIX that you are using in your environment so it tends to need to be restarted more often that other servers. As such it doesn't make sense to have NIM co-exist with any application with availability requirements.
