What else do you do?

I know we all do Unix. What else do you do? What hobbies do you have?
I like trekking, primarily in
the Sahyadri mountains. These are around 100-odd km from Mumbai, India. There are a lot of old (16th-17th century) mountain-top forts, which make for excellent climbing.

Unfortunately, I'm in Singapore since June 2006, so no treks since then. :frowning:

Its been a while since a new thread started here, so...

Hi blowtorch,

We are almost neighbors these days, I'm on business travel in Bangkok.

Cheers!

My hobbies are: reading, playing classical guitar and - foremost - playing strategy games.

I have a deep (alas unanswered) love for chess, play bridge at tournament level and like about every other game where luck is no factor but strategic thinking is. Perhaps you may find a bakunin on some chess-, bridge- or online-game-site. Chances are that is me.

Lots of sports, - european football, basketball, table tennis, billiard
But mostly I'm attached to the Music - I used to be a radio joker, DJ (still playing a little bit)

My main hobby is playing Magic: The Gathering. I host a weekly game that has been continuously running for over 8 years. I've taught at least 15 people how to play, and the size of our group has fluctuated from 4 to 8 regular players over the years with a total of about 12 who show up on occasion at least. I also am a huge Minnesota Wild hockey fan - usually attending 1/4 to 1/3 of their home games each year in person and catching almost all the rest on TV.

I used to be very into Chess. In fact, I narrowly missed making the top 50 most active tournament players (in terms of rated games played) in the U.S. during the late '80s. My girlfriend at the time actually made the top 50 list for women by attending most of the tournaments I played in with me. But once I got to grad school and started my career I didn't have time to study/practice/play enough to maintain my strength any more so I mostly gave up. However, my wife found an amateur chess league in our city so I joined a team last month. Maybe I'll end up back playing chess seriously again after dipping my toe back in the water that way. . . .

I also golf, bowl, and play a little electric guitar - all very badly

I'm the sort of person who likes to give anything I think looks interesting a chance.

Currently I don't have much free time, but mostly I like things that keeps me active. I play hurling* and basketball. In the past I also played football*, rugby and volleyball to a fairly high competitive level but a nasty knee injury a couple of years back has forced me to cut back.

I am also a bit fan of water and sail, powerboat and windsurf when I can, as well as being a very keen diver which, in terms of the amount of time invested, is probably my main hobby.

I will add my name to the list of guitarists, and can also play valved brass instruments and piano though currently I do not have either.

At some time in the not too distant future I hope to have time to get my pilots license.

Someone take you down while playing 'football'? Looks like a pretty rough game.

Wow ! I see similar interests being posted here.

Am a big fan of Chess .. Chess and Chess all the time.
When it comes to strategy game on the field you can see me playing football.

Those were nice times when I used to play Chess all the time.
Apart from that I do write poems in Tamil, I love doing that.

We should have a Unix.com email chess tournament or something.

I haven't played for a few years though, but at one point was very.... adequate.

I spend most of my free time with my family, taking the kids out and going to the beach now that the weather is warming up. I enjoy food (a bit too much) and like to cook.

I also read a lot, although most of what I read is Unix related so that doesn't really count as "something else"

I'm a dabbler in many areas. I have dipped my fingers in chemistry, video games, chess, football, trekking, reading, strategy games, volleyball.

I learned to play volleyball at the previous company. Even managed to block a spiker once. I played mostly as libero.

I have been playing Football since school, and plan to join the team of the current organization.

Reading, Chess (Just ordered a new yellow chronos my original has died), Backgammon, Wing Chun and various and assorted computer games. I would love to get back into music but was a bit scarred by a tyrannical violin instructor in my youth

Hi everybody.
Well, at this time I do not have much spare time but boxing and sports in general is what I like most (play them, I mean). Appart from that, going out with my friends and wife to have some "caitas y pinchos"* is the other option

  • caitas: spanish word to say, more or less, draught beer served in small glasses.
pinchos: In Spain we only visit bars where pinchos are served along with caas. Or, in other words, we only drink when it's accompained with some food

Seems like a good chance to introduce myself  I've been reading these forums for a while, usually as a result of a google search for something. Figured it was time I made an account and started to 'give back' a little.

So howdie all!

Hobbies for me have taken a bit of a back seat for now as I've just started a business on the side and am currently running it and doing my day job too -> not that much time left in the 24hrs for sleeping let alone playing :frowning:

Before that (and hopefully after things settle down), I have been learning to fly a hang glider (I'd recommend this to all, it's an amasing rush), open circuit scuba diving (SSI / PADI AOW) and hanging out on the beach with my two dogs (a Golden Retriever and a Newfoundland)

I follow Dexter, Boston Legal, Stargate Atlantis and The Unit on TV, can enjoy a good multiplayer computer game occasionally, but never really enjoyed chess much

Trekking/Tramping/Hiking is nice with the dogs but otherwise doesn't do lots for me, I'm fairly fit but clearly have too short an attention span so start to get bored  I can certainly appreciate the appeal though, just that it's not really for me.

A geek that Boxes is a first for me, congrats for breaking a few stereotypes there
I've always been intersted in boxing but never got too fired up about getting punched in the head so sort of shyed away from it... :stuck_out_tongue:

I do a little Wing Tsun Kung Fu but am very much a junior, spent a couple of years at it but it takes many years to get to the point where it's not just a huge liability :o

Yes, I feel a little bit odd here for that reason. Anyway, I've been playing martial arts since I was a child. I started with Karate until I got 1st dan, then I started with boxing and valetudo. But, as I mentioned, for now, only when I have some spare time...

From home to office, and vice versa.:o

Well, to answer your question: i get up from bed on a daily basis without calling that a favourite pastime of mine. ;-))

Hi everybody again!
I have to add another thing to my (little) list: parachute jump. Last saturday I did my first jump and I hope to repeat soon... It's amazing and I recommend it to you all!!!

Cool... I have this and bungee jumping in my 'to do' list.
