Solaris 11.2

I have downloaded version 11.2 of solaris to try out on a spare 500GB hard drive I have lying around. When I boot from the live dvd it allows me to select the desktop, and then it comes up with Sun OS 5.1 64 bit and hangs there, keyboard is dead, I have to resort to the reset button on the tower.

My specs are:

MSI X99S mpower intel motherboard, intel i7 5820K cpu, 32 GIG ddr 4 ram. It currently has 2 hard drives with a different O/S on it, and I have space for a third as I would like to try out solaris but it will not let me,Nvidia GTX 970 Graphics card.

Use a software like VirtualBox/VMware to install Solaris. This makes it a lot easier to try out the stuff. For a bare metall install you should check the HCLs to make sure your hardware is compatible with Solaris.

Yes, use Virtualbox but first thing to do is to check that the DVD is healthy by booting it in another machine. Just test you can get to the 'live' console as this won't damage any other OS already on the machine.

(I've had trouble booting on systems with less than 4GB RAM but you say that you have 32GB so no issue there.)

I am downloading another copy, just to be sure. I have used solaris before, I think it was version 10 something, and I would like try the latest(ish) version.

Thanks guys for your help, if I could have got a screen grab I would have but the system was frozen.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but you are downloading the x86 version of Solaris not the Sparc version.

I did download the x86 version :b:

As I said, I did download another version, burnt it, frooze at the same point where I would expect it to show progress but not luck. Could some of my hardware that it does not like as I have a lot of USB2 and some USB 3 ports.

Have you tried looking at your machine's BIOS settings in case one or more of them is the culprit?

Boot with the "-v" option:

did you burn it to a CDR or a DVD-r?
