As far as I know, some OS/filesystems can't handle more than 2 GB, what is your config ?

There's such question asked here before, unfortunately, noone has replied, I can't answer this either for HP-UX. If you don't get definitive answer, I'd suggest that you connect to HP support and ask for it. I guess that only the old versions of tars/filesystems have this infamous limitation for 2GB.
1 The ustar header format allows for file sizes to be as large as 8 GB. Therefore, the tar command is enabled to archive files of up to 8 GB in size.
