screen remains dark when box is on

I am somewhat new to UNIX.

I inherited a sun ULTRA 5 box from my cousin. When I turn it on it seems to be working alright but I can't get a picture on the screen. The sound output from the CD player is working. The machine seems to be working but the only thing missing is the picture. When I turn it on, the monitor remains dark with no color.

Any idea whta's going on?

You may have a bad monitor.

Did it work before or is this a different monitor on the Ultra 5?
Can you ping the system (if on a network)? If so, can you log in?
(This will show it isn't hanging - that it is up and running)

Actually, since I got the box, it has not worked before. This is the first time that I am trying it? The person that I inherited the box from is no longer here so I can't ask him.

The monitor is not a sun monitor. I know that the monitor works because I hooked it up to
my NT box and it works great.

Or may be it has no media, sound card, etc? If it sounds like those might be the problem,
how do I check to ensure that?

Any Idea?

You should be getting something off of it even if it isn't booting.

When you power it on, what happens? Count how many times the keyboard lites up (cap locks or num lock), how many times it beeps, if you can hear the disks starting up...

Do you have another monitor you can try on the box? (hate to ask the obvious)
