Need to Share between Solaris 10 and Windows

Hello everyone, was looking to get some help.

I am very new to Unix and need to join a Sun Ultra 24 workstation running SOLARIS 10 to a small Windows network for file sharing.

The Windows Network is a closed network using a Dell server running Windows 2003 Server. The clients on the network are all running XP SP2 (as I said, this is a closed system and the environment is frozen.

I heard that Samba will allow file sharing between a Unix based system and a windows network. My question is:

  • Is Samba the best choice for simple file sharing?
  • Is the software installed onto the individual clients that need to share files or is it strictly a server based protocol?
  • Anyone know of a good step by step installation guide?

Thanks for any help, I know I have a lot of learning ahead of me.

I am not sure if solaris can become full client of win2k3 domain using Samba. I do however suggest you look into mounting NFS shares from solaris on to Windows 2003.

You can also try mounting windows shares on solaris using samba.

Samba software can be installed on solaris and linux. Download Samba

samba.org does have good documentation you may want to take a look at that.
