Hello,
I would post your question on the Symantec site. I have a support contract with Symantec and the Symantec forum gets me an answer before the techs even get to my ticket. Link below.

The Symantec NetBackup 7.5 Upgrade Guide gives detailed information about upgrading to Symantec NetBackup 7.5.

You may also choose to visit couple of other Symantec websites:

  • The 7.x Upgrade Portal on Symantec Support site for the greatest information on upgrading to Symantec NetBackup 7.x.
  • The Installation and Upgrade checklist on Symantec's SORT website is a useful tool to visit before you proceed with the upgrade.

manalisharmabe,
I was assuming that since you posted this question in the Solaris section, that you where installing on Solaris. We currently have 7.1.0.2 install on Solaris 10 SPARC (master), Windows 2008 (media - for VMs), Solaris 10 x86 (media) and Linux (Teradata - media). We are testing for the upgrade to 7.5

I looked at the info on the page from the link you provided. From what I read the older versions of Windows don't have 7.5 clients for them. Take note that the NetBackup client and server programs do not need to at the same level to work together. You can still use the older clients to backup the servers until you rebuild the client server to a newer OS.

Some notes from when we did our last upgrade.
1) Name the new backup server the same as the old.
2) Solaris x86 has less NetBackup features then Solaris SPARC

I think best approach will be to open a case with Symantec and ask them to provide you help in NBU upgrade. 7.0 to 7.5 is a minor upgrade and should not cause any problem - however, open a case and they will guide you through the process.

If you have liberty of second free disk in the backup server, then I would suggest to clone the original disk first before attempting upgrade. That will save lots of hassle if things dont go as planned.

Second free disk, what is this concept?

Any idea , please explain.

Sorry i am replying too late.

I think he wants you to have a clone so that if dive0, with your OS & NetBackup, have issues you with the upgrade. You can then boot from drive1 with the old setup. Much less down time this way.

I was with Symantec Netbackup team for quite sometime now. Here are the steps you should do

  • Verify and confirm the Netbackup 7.5 compatibility with the Host OS,its hardware.

  • Stop any backup jobs.

  • Suspend the scheduling.

  • Add the 7.5 License Key

  • Untar the package you have downloaded.

  • Check for Catalog Consistency (*optional - you have to do nbcc with their support)

  • Start installation. There are 2 phases to this. Phase1 & Phase2.

Let me know how it goes

yet to get approval to do it on production.

Also when you untar, please use *gtar instead of regular tar.
There were issues with 7.1 when attempted to untar using regular tar command.
