Microphone doesn't work in Ubuntu 10.04

When I try to speak to the microphone, there is no echo in the speaker. I test it again by dialing Skype, there is still no sound in my side while I can hear the other side.

What can I do?

Thanks in advance!

Let me know if it helped.

thanks!
I will have a try and report the result later

If you go to System--> Preference--> Sound
then select input tab
Mute option should be unchecked and also the volume meter should be up.

I have tried all the measurements above, but they all failed.

ALSA seems working, and my sound panel is on a normal mode. Still no sound out by recording voice from a recorder or skype echo test...

BTW, the version of my skype is 2.1.0.81.
