Linux

I have a red hat box that is connected to the internet. I can get out using a browser but cant telnet or ftp can anyone tell me where this is configured or what the problem might be?

Do you have some kind of firewall blocking outbound connections?

i do believe during the installation of redhat you must turned on the firewall function on Linux. Linux do contain its built in firewall for use. Try to disable the firewall function and try telnet or ftp again.

it's possible thet your h/w firewall is blocking these services.

One of the first times I installed linux, I decided to go through and only install the programs that I thought I would need, saving space for other things on my pc. Anyway the result was that I was lacking the ability to ssh, telnet, use nmap, xmms, and a load of other things. Be sure that you installed the applications necessary.
