I recently bought a ultra 5 workstation and I'm running solaris 8. I wanted to change the ip address for my machine but I don't know what file to edit to do it. the only way I've seen how is to reboot the machine and I don't want to do that.

You can use the ifconfig command to change the IP address. See the man page for details.
If you want to change it permanently, the easiest way is to use the 'sys-unconfig' command. If you run this, then the next time you boot, you will be promptedto enter all your networking information.
