If there is anyone who is very good at AIX 5.1..

I have two drawers with two BD servers and App servers of RS/6000 630 model being installed in the bank.. We don't have any specialists for AIX.. And I'm having problems with setting up the network.. Actually I'm so much fed up with that darn FC switches.. I did not manage to make so that the servers could define the switches and have connection... If there is a good book for making up clusters in AIX, i would very grateful...

I don't know of any good books, but you might want to dig around for a book on HACMP. I think that is probably what you are using or will be using for the clustering software. IBM may have redbook on it or something similar, I have never checked.

As for any networking problems you may have, have you tried 'smitty'?

If you give more details specific to the network/FC/cluster issues you are having, you may get more answers.

Dear Tio,
thanx for your advice, it's just it is a little bit hard for me to explain this problem in English.. It would be a lot easier if I could find docs in russian..

The problem is I did not manage to define the FC switch in my AIX.. I used Smit and other stuff.. but still the system cannot see my Storage server and two expansions (they are connected to the Fibre optic switch..).. Somewhere i found that i need to have some terminal pc, and with telnet write the Ip adress for the switch.. but the telnet did not manage to see the switch too... maybe because i didn't plug the right wire.. it was rs432, or something to COM1 port.. if there is any way to define the ip adress of the switch within the AIX, i would be very very grateful to find it out..

Thanx in advance.

Hi,

Here you have some links to AIX documentation in russian http://www.rustc.ru/eng/projects.html .

I don't know if you'll be able to connect to the FC switch through your RS server... does the FC has any serial port ? I think it's time to contact the vendor...

I understand a bit better now what you are trying to do. I also agree with jsilva, you will need to find docs for the FC Switch. You need to zone the switch so the WWNs for the AIX systems and the WWNs for the storage controllers are in the same zone. You may also need to setup some sort of LUN security on the SAN side. If you can give us details about the vendor and model of the FC Switch and Storage Unit someone on the forum can probabaly help you. If the AIX systems and the storage unit are the only devices on the FC Switch, you should be able to either turn off zoning or create a zone with all nodes (WWNs) in it so both systems see all LUNs off the storage unit.

Thank you Jsilva for the link, I hope i will find any solution over there,

Tio let me describe you the system in whole..
There are two drawers.. One of them has one Application server and one DataBase servers (RS/6000 from IBM), also one Storage server FastT700 (IBM) and two expansion disk arrays(IBM), each containing 11 drives... And the second drawer only has an App server and one BD server.. also I have two FC switches (IBM SAN switch).. Now, all of the described above equipment, except application servers are connected with fibre optic cables.. The app servers i connected to a dumb hub, which is also connected to the FC switch... Each server has three ethernet cards.. Two 10/100 and one 1000TX for HACMP.. So now each of my 4 servers has three ip adresses.. They ping each others.. But the problem is only with the FC switch.. I did not manage to define its ip, so that i could get connected with my storage array..

Best Regards...

Hi Dilshik,
I think I understand where your problem is now. Unfortunately I don't have an answer for you. You will have to find a manual for your IBM switches. I have only 1 IBM FC Switch at work. When it was configured we attached a crossover ethernet cable from it to a laptop. When the switch is booted, if it cannot obtain a DHCP address, it will default to an address (which you will have to find in the manual). You can then set your laptop to the same subnet and login with the default userid/pass which should also be in the manual. If someone has already done this, they may have assigned a static IP and/or changed the password. In that case you may have to hard reset the switch at the risk of losing your zoning info. From your description it sounds like the servers can see the storage so it is likely someone has already done what I have mentioned above.

Dear Tio,
Thanx a lot for your help...
I finally managed to define the FC switch.. The problem was in the wire.. It's just, i overlooked the switch cable, and was trying to connect to the switch with an ordinary serial cable.. whereas I should have used the special cable... Everything is ok now, I have started formatting the disk array of my storage server... Everything is going ok.. I think that in about a week, I'll finish up with this, and start the whole system..
Thank you very much, again. You've done a lot of help...
