IDE controlled / RAID card issue Suse 9.2

I just built a new box to run Suse, and I guess I shoud have spent more time researching the HCL. Anyway, the Promise RAID card I have will not work, and I am unable to install the OS. The only other IDE devide in the box is a DVDOM.

I can only think of 2 options, but would appreciate some advice.

  1. Buy a PSI IDE controller, and move the DVDROM to it. Then use the two onboard IDE controllers to connect the four drives, and use software RAID to configure the volumes.

  2. Buy a pair of 2 channel IDE cards (assuming these are even made), and connect the four disks as master on each channel. Then use software RAID. Leave the DVDROM on the controller on the motherboard.

What would you do in this situation?

You can get 2-channel IDE expansion cards - theres one here and according to the blurb on the site it appears to be supported on 2.4.x and later kernels - then use software RAID-5. Even though this is a UK site it shows they're inexpensive.

Cheers
