How to connect to Pseries without video/display port

Hello,

I have an old Pseries P520 9111-520 and it doesn't have the PCI graphics - video - display card in it.

On the back side of it, I can see two serial ports.

What is the easiest way to put console display for this system ?

Would a serial cable ( null modem cable ) from Pseries to PC and using hyper terminal be enough or do I need to go via ASMI ?

Steps would be appreciated, as I searched the net and could not find documented procedure.

[*]Integrated:

[*]Dual 10/100/1000 Ethernet
[*]Ultra320 SCSI controller with dual ports (internal) and optional RAID adapter
[*]Service processor
[*]Hot-swap and redundant fans
[*]Two USB ports
[*]Two serial ports
[*]Two HMC ports
[*]Two remote I/O (RIO) ports

Hi,

please have a look here
Regards
zxmaus

Now you have 2 possibilities

  1. Serial
  2. HMC

If you will find proper USB->Serial cable you will be able to go to SMS menu and start some installation.

zxmaus, i checked that document. It says

Use SMIT to define a tty on an available serial port on your server.
Use the SMIT System Environments and Assign the Console menus to set this tty to be your console for the next system restart.

That document is if you already have a console, you can use SMIT or SMITTY to redirect it to serialport vty

What if the system has no CONSOLE at all. there is no way to change the settings in SMS menu since there is no display

gito you mentioned "If you will find proper USB->Serial cable you will be able to go to SMS menu and start some installation."

Gito: I connected Serial to Serial ( Pseries Serial to PC Serial ) opened hyper terminal but does not show up anything. I think the display on Pseries is not configured for serial but it is configured for tty0

what is the fastest and easiest way to open a console or connect a laptop to Pseries.

Unfortunately, we don't know the IP address , otherwise we could have telnet.

The scenario is like this:

  • Pseries without video card -- cannot connect normal monitor
  • We don't know the IP address of the machine so telnet is not possible

what is the way to connect to the pseries ?

Porobably your server was connected to HMC or IVE before
In this moment serial ports are disabled

Now you have 2 ways:

  1. Easy not legal way - you can install hmc on vmware and connect
    the machine to HMC
  2. Reset FSP and connect directly by serial
    IBM

According This connect server to power allow him to work for a moment.

Connect directly with your machine to hmc port

FSP ip will be:
HMC1 as 192.168.2.147 and HMC2 as 192.168.3.147
try to open those IPs by https
Probably it login/pass will be admin

If pass will be wrong or ip will be no working
try this p520 reset procedure
IBM

After loging to asmi use this procedure to enable serial port IBM
