hey i just got a Sun ultra 5!!!

now what do i do?

im looking at it and i booted it after a bunch of code i got a line askign for the password
i also downloaded solaris 10
any advice on how to install it?

You will need the CD version, not DVD if you have only a CD drive.

Next you need to restart the box in OpenProm mode.

Are you using a serial console, or screen, mouse, keyboard?

As the machine starts, type Stop-A to get into the prom.

Then type "boot cdrom" with the first disk in the drive and follow the instructions. I recommend going through the whole install two or three times making notes on your selections before doing the final install.

For a simple set up:

choose a decent swap size (say 512MB)
put everything in one single partition, don't go for the separate /opt or /export/home.
install everything

ok i got all 5 of the cds
and whats open prom?
im using a mouse keyboard and monitor all conected to the right ports

It's the boot up code in the PROM of the machine, it executes when it fires up. If reads various variables from EEPROM and does what it's told. If it's told to boot from harddisk on start up it will.

When you break into it you should get a relatively crude "ok" prompt.

Type "boot cdrom" at this prompt.

allright i was wonderign if theres any way to get past the password? if i jsut let it boot after a while it gives me a line asking for the password

That is what password are for, to stop people.

You can, you boot from CD, go into shell mode, mount the harddisk, find the /etc/passwd file, do the various business.

However, reinstalling the operating system on newly formatted drives means you start from a clean sheet of paper with nothing lurking on the system you know nothing about.

ok its asking me for a file after i boot from cd

  1. what CD's do you have, list their names?

  2. which CD did you boot from?

  3. which file is it asking for?

i put the first cd in its asking me to input a file idk what to do

can you answer the three questions as I asked them?

If there is something on the screen please type it in exactly as it is shown.

Do you have both an "install" disk and a "disk 1" disk?

Try the install disk.

il be back tomorro around noon ok?

ok i get to the ok prompt i type in " boot cdrom" it reboots and than it runs the cd than gives me a bunch of code says the drive is full and than reboots
and asks me for the console login

the best thing to do is to use a seriell cable to your ultra 5 and to work with a terminalsoftware. if you do so, you can post the whole output of your seriell session. that will make the troubleshooting much easier fo all of us!

ok heres the error i got
it gives me errors it saya the drive is full

read the above post....

I doubt very much that is all it says....

Normally the sequence is (from memory)

choose language
choose terminal type
choose networking information
choose timezone
choose drive to install on
choose upgrade or initial
choose backup or not
choose what to install
choose layout
choose root password
install base
install additional
reboot

it wont start the gui it says thers some type of error and that it has to reboot

Have you connected a serial cable as recommended to capture what it is printing?

At the moment the information you are giving us is far from enough to help you.

umm what do meen printing?? do you meen displayign on the screen?

thats it! if you work with a serial cable, you will be able to log all the output from the ultra5 in a file and then post the output here...
