Help with Solaris 8 10/00 Installation on Sun Fire V490 Server

cat note
Hi Sun Solaris Experts,
When I try to install Solaris 8 10/00 OS via the Solaris 8 Installation Disk on our Sun Fire V490 Server using the command [boot cdrom], I get:

boot: cannot open kernel/sparcv9/unix

which means it can't find the unix kernel file on the installation disk [see the Log information below from the Sun Fire V490 Server].
By the way, I reset the boot file in PROM to blank and NVRAM to factory default setting, but these actions didn't resolve the issue.

The Sun Solaris 8 10/00 OS was purchased separately since I didn't have the original OS that came with the Sun Fire V490.

I've read online that in SPARC based systems and in Solaris 2.6 and subsequent releases, the kernel is located in /platform/ <architecture of the Sun System> /kernel/unix .

Unfortunately, I don't have another Unix system to explore the Solaris 8 Installation Disk to determine whether or not the missing boot file exists on it but in a different location on the disk, and I can't use Windows OS [Windows Explorer] to look for it since Windows can't read the files on the disk.

Do you know where the missing boot file might be on the Solaris 8 10/00 Installation Disk and if so, then please provide that information to me?

or

Based on the boot message above, do you think the problem is something else related to the hardware on Sun Fire V490 or having the wrong version of Solaris 8 OS?

Thank you for your help.

My money has to be on that the Solaris 8 CD/DVD you have is too old for that hardware. If you have a compatible distribution it should just work.

I'm assuming that the DVD drive is working? Does it flash when you hit return on the boot command?

The minimum supported Solaris versions for a V490 system are:

You can download Solaris 10 from Oracle.

As DN2 says, your V490 will only support the Solaris versions he states. If your CPU speed was less than 1500MHz then you could run Solaris 8 but with 1500MHz or more CPU that's not possible.

Thank you very much for your responses from both hicksd8 & DukeNuke2 to my question, and I appreciate you. Your information is very useful to me and now I know how to proceed quickly and correctly.

Please don't discuss illegal actions in the forum. Downloading patches and updates from Oracle will need an active service contract!
