Faulty PSU - but its still working !?!

Hello

We have a power supply in an x4100 (x86) and it seems to be faulty but it is still working!?! (this box only has one PSU). We are getting Orange flashing warning light on the front of the box and the LED labelled rear PSu is solid orange ...We don't seem to have had any syslog error messages generated at all on this so ive run ipmitool to see if it can give me some info.

./ipmitool chassis status
System Power : on
Power Overload : false
Power Interlock : inactive
Main Power Fault : true
Power Control Fault : false
Power Restore Policy : always-off
Last Power Event :
Chassis Intrusion : inactive
Front-Panel Lockout : inactive
Drive Fault : false
Cooling/Fan Fault : false

./ipmitool sunoem led get all
sys.psfail.led | ON
sys.tempfail.led | OFF
sys.fanfail.led | OFF
bp.power.led | ON
bp.locate.led | OFF
bp.alert.led | SLOW
etc, etc

Can anybody give me an indication whether this unit will need replacing ...or if there are further tests i should perform

(this is an x86 box so prtdiag wont work unfortunately)

Thanks & regards
Gary

Is it even plugged in?

The PSU are redundant, so you don't need them all to be working for the system to come/stay up, but if it has failed it should be replaced.

Sorry, as i mentioned above this box only has one PSU !! and its the one thats being used to power the unit ....I have no secondary PSU unit

cheers

log a call with SUN support

I would replace it. It may be an indication that it is starting to fail.

Ok thanks, call booked with Sun and replacement on its way

Just an FYI...as I see you have already fixed it.

The led would turn amber if it has failed OR if it has detected a fault.
I know on the SPARC SunFire range, such as the v440, fan speed could trigger the led to change to amber. If its fan is spinning at a lower rpm then the set threshold(not tunable) it would turn amber aswell.

Best course of action for any amber leds is to log a call with Sun and replace the affected HW ASAP.

Well I'm confused here, according to Hardware | Oracle

How did you get an x4100 with only one?

Base config for a X4100 has only one power supply.

ie:
Sun Fire X4100 x64 Server: 1 * AMD Opteron Model 248 (2.2 GHz 1 MB)
processor, 2 * 512 MB PC3200 DDR-400 memory, no disk, 1 * Power Supply
Unit, Service Processor, 4 * 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports, 3 * USB 1.1 ports,
1 * 64-bit/133MHz PCI-X slot, 1 * 64-bit/100MHz PCI-X slot, RoHS-5 Compliant
