you could try to use gnu make instead (gmake). i find it to be a little more forgiving.

or if you don't have a specific need to go to 5.5, try 5.4.2.1 release (in pkg format) - ftp://ftp.sunfreeware.com/pub/freeware/sparc/10/netsnmp-5.4.2.1-sol10-sparc-local.gz
