Empty /dev/rmt

Hi Guys,

I a newbie in Unix environment. I need a help to detect my external SCSI tape drive. I tried with command drvconfig;devlinks;tapes.. but when I go to /dev/rmt/, the directory is still empty.

I also tried with add_drv -v st but I'm getting this message

# add_drv -v st
exit status = 0
devfsadm: driver failed to attach: st
exit status = 11
Warning: Driver (st) successfully added to system but failed to attach
#

-I hope following output might help you guys to find out whats wrong with my system. Please do let me know if you guys need more info-

Thanks a lot in advance

Hi,
I wood suggest to delete all entries under the folder
rm /dev/rmt/*
then
drvconfig
and
tapes

If there are a tape device you can find new entries at
ls /dev/rmt # as example the output of the command:
0 0cb 0hb 0lb 0mb 0u 1 1cb 1hb 1lb 1mb 1u
0b 0cbn 0hbn 0lbn 0mbn 0ub 1b 1cbn 1hbn 1lbn 1mbn 1ub
0bn 0cn 0hn 0ln 0mn 0ubn 1bn 1cn 1hn 1ln 1mn 1ubn
0c 0h 0l 0m 0n 0un 1c 1h 1l 1m 1n 1un

Are there new entries?

If not please send the output of the hardware tests via obp commands:

OK# set auto-boot? false
OK# reset-all

After the reboot :

OK# probe-scsi-all

And the output of this command is major to investigate the problem.

Best regards
joerg

It is also useful to see the output of the prtdiag -v commend.
joerg

Hi joerg,

How are you?

Thanks for your willingness to help me out to sort out this problem. I followed your guideline but still seeing empty /dev/rmt/

# rm /dev/rmt/*
/dev/rmt/*: No such file or directory
#
# drvconfig
# tapes
# cd /dev/rmt
# ls -a
. ..
#

This is from OBP prompt.
setenv auto-boot? false
auto-boot? = false

ok probe-scsi-all
/pci@1f,0/pci@1/scsi@2,1

/pci@1f,0/pci@1/scsi@2

ok

And, this is output from prtdiag -v command

# /usr/platform/`uname -i`/sbin/prtdiag -v

Hi,
you can see that the ultra10/5 you use find the scsi controller
PCI-2 33 2 scsi-glm Symbios,53C875
but the tape is not recognized by the system!

Switch the tape on! Bad joke, I now!

What kind of tape you use?
Change the cable.
My bee a old OBP Version?

So long as the system is not recognized your hardware on OBP level you are not able to use it!

Best regards
joerg

Pleas try this link.
SunSolve Home

There is a bug:
4407869: probe-scsi and probe-scsi-all need to recognize device_type=scsi*

Best regards
joerg

Hi Joerg,

many thanks for the help. Appreciate that.

I'm using Sun DDS3 (SUN 599-2107-01 24GB DAT / DDS3 SCSIN)
I already changed the cable but still same.
OBP old version? hrmm.. not sure about that.

however, thanks for the sunsolve links. I'll try test it by this weekend and let you know.

Thank pal :b:

Hello Joerg,

Unfortunately, after I update flash PROM, I cant detect my tape drive.. it is still showing empty /dev/rmt.

There are only two ideas:

I know that the system you use is auto terminated but please us a terminator and test is again.

Please try to switch to a other SCSI ID.

Hint:
Removable Media (External) - SPARCstorage UniPack 4-8GB DDS-2/3

Sorry but if you absolute sure that you use the right Cable (No SCSI differential cable) I have no more idears.
best regrads
