Downgrade bos.rte.install ?

Hello,

Running AIX 6.1 TL2 SP4.
bos.rte.install was upgraded to 6.1.4.1 by accident(commited). I'm trying to downgrade it. On my install DVD I found bos.rte.install_6.1.2.1.bff. So I'm trying to downgrade:

# installp -acF -d/soft1 bos.rte.install 6.1.2.1

What I'm doing wrong?
I took wrong file from DVD ? - if so I can't find more like bos.rte.install.. ?

thanks
Vilius

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings but I believe there is nothing you can do apart from a complete restore from a mksysb (which I hope you have).

I will be quite happy for someone to contradict me as this will be good news for you.

Hi,

I'm not an expert - so maybe you right.
But for example error states that bos.rte.install_6.1.2.1.bff is update fileset not base fileset? (that's why it refuses to force install?)
So there should be bos.rte.install BASE fileset on my DVDs - but how do I find it?

Go onto your CD
filesets ending with I are base filesets, filesets ending with U are update filesets.

You maybe have to overwrite with a much much older version, and than install a later update package.

Hello,

Could you explain what you mean "ending by I/U"
Files in my DVD have .bff extension and if I list software contents using lslpp or smit I see no I/U either..

thanks
Vilius

Hello,

I managed to list in the end:

  bos.rte.install 6.1.2.1 SF N usr,root
# LPP Install Commands

But no "I" bos.rte.install base package.

What is the point of trying to remove it? It shouldn't cause your system any problems and you should update to the associated level sometime soon, or TL5 or 6, anyway.

I don't believe you can overwrite or remove a required but committed fileset without reinstalling - as johnf said - without resorting to hacking it out of the ODM and you should not try this unless you know exactly what you are doing and have lots of verified backups before you start.

Check the installp man pages to see if you have a I or U fileset, not that I think it will help in the case of trying to remove / downgrade a required and committed fileset.

My advice would be to just leave it alone / live with it until you update to TL4 and then the problem will just go away.

TL2 is already out of defect support, even early service packs for TL3 will be past defect support any time now, and TL4 is already on SP9 so you really should be going to this level in the very near future.

HTH.
