hi sirs

can u tell the difference between /var/log/syslogs and /var/adm/messages

in my working place i am having two servers.
in one servers messages file is empty and syslog file is going on increasing..
and in another servers message file is going on increasing but syslog file is empty...

sirs can u plz tell me the difference between syslogs and messages

Hi,

have a look at the man page for syslogd, and more likely have a look at the /etc/syslog.conf on each machine....you'll probably find they have different definitions set.

HTH

The /var/log/syslog file contains mail system messages.

The /var/adm/messages file is catch-all log file for a number of messages from the UNIX kernel as well as for other logging applications such as syslogd .

Thanks
