Climate change anyone?

Hi all together,

The US President considers this topic as not serious. Here in Germany there it's taken very serious, made a lot of words, but little action.

As far as I am reading now - written here quite clearly ... [1] N.Y. Times - loosing earth or as video with the current state of scientific data from the campgain XR here: [2] XR - Heading for Extinction, there had been roughly 40 years since the first urgent warnings widespread in the media. Forecasts had been overfullfilled. More extreme weather phenomena are rising in terms of draughts and floods and others. Nevertheless CO2 emissions had been rising for the last 40 years.

Science states the consequences of different levels of temperature rises. If the world and most countries would fulfill the goals which were agreed upon an avoidance to global scale temperature rise up to 2 degrees can be achieved. A mark where catastrophes will be mostly bearable for major areas in the world.

Since there had been done mostly nothing in the last 40 years it is unlikely that limitation of 2 degrees will be achieved. In higher levels of temperature rise additional tipping points [3] Tipping Points in the Climate System come into play in zones of temperature rise(melting of ice sheets, massive forest dieback,...) which will cause further acceleration to the situation.

What do you think about climate change?
Is it a joke/fake/not serious enough/lobby driven campaign for you?

Regards,
stomp

At present the polititians see environmental precautions as an investment.
And they do not see a return of investment within their scope - 4 years. "Bad deal" :stuck_out_tongue:
Indeed the current climate change is the outcome from the last 40+ years.
It is fact. The precaution promises are fake.
With the positive exception of some scandinavian countries

Judging by the curves that have been created from all the data world wide it reminds me of a forwards biased diode.

A period of little or no change within limits as EMF is applied, which then hits a knee as said limit is exceeded that heads towards meltdown rapidly as more EMF is applied, culminating into total destruction once a certain PD is reached across its two _poles_.

That looks like our planet's demise except instead of EMF/PD we are looking at Degrees Celsius/Centigrade and gaseous materials that retain heat as they absorb heat radiation. The sad fact is that those _black_body_ gases are being generated in large quantities by man by many various means.
Nature is also playing its part too so the aggregate becomes a dangerous combined quantity.

It is not looking too good for advanced lifeforms on this tiny blue pebble we live on but I suspect amoebae and bacteria will survive and start evolution all over again.
That is until this little blue pebble is absorbed by an expanding sun in around 4 Billion, (short scale), years time.

Personally, I do believe we humans have an affect on the environment. Think it's all talk? Just look at the animal kingdom we've cleaned house with, all the killing and gaming has caught up with us. Buffalo's where once the norm as swines. However, I do believe that we are making progress towards a cleaner; instead of "greener" future. It may not be at the speed you want but, progress is there. Yes our current President, Donald Trump and his cabinet are naive to think that we all; the world are a not having an impact on the environment. Question, why is China investing so much in alternative energy?

In a The Future of Humanity, by Micho Kaku (or it might have been one of his other novels.) Dr. Kaku presents an abundance of theory about why we do not see planets like Earth in the universe (so far) and so why it is so rare to see Earth like planets.

Dr. Kaku explains that most evolved civilizations, like Earth for example, will destroy themselves or be destroyed by external forces and never make to "the advanced planetary stages". Dr. Kaku offers a lot of very interesting theory about this and classifies planetary civilizations based on how advanced they are (energy production and control, etc). Without going into the details, Dr. Kaku does a very good job of explaining why life, as we know it here on Earth, is so rare in the universe and how difficult it is for planetary civilizations to evolve or advance out of the current "somewhat primitive" (my words, not his) state we (on Earth) are in now.

My best guess is that humans will destroy this planet like a cancer destroys an animal; and Earth will never reach an "advanced planetary state". It's only a matter of time.

Earth is a gift. However, human greed, consumerism, racism, sexism, political and religious conflict, hate, selfishness, etc. etc. are destroying the planet. It's so primitive, our world; but there is little we can do about it (sorry, but just look around you). Yes, we can recycle and try to change things, but on a global scale, the fate of Earth seem sealed. Humans are killing off animal, plant and insect species at an alarming rate. Humans are dumping waste on every corner of the planet. This planet is a huge cesspool of human waste and destruction.

I have visited over 50 countries in my short life here on Earth and worked in a number of them. I live on the seacoast now for the daily clean ocean breeze and the sounds of the surf.

It never ceases to amazing me how selfish, hateful and emotionally unstable humans are, everywhere. I have been on around 1000 scuba dives globally, and you would be amazed to see the human destruction that happens around islands (under the sea) where everywhere humans go; especially in the name of tourism and commerce. The best dive sites I have been on are the ones far away from humans as they can be (like a shipwreck far away from islands where humans visit). That is a sad commentary on what humans are doing to this Earth.

For me, I feel lucky to live in the world today, but I am quite sure future generations will live in a much more dark, dystopian world where horrible things we never imagined would be true, will be true.

Climate change is only one of myriad problems humans are responsible for on Earth. It is only one of myriad debates that keep people distracted from making the Earth a better place.

Now, the big push is for "AI", self driving Ubers, and all the other information-related technology and all the giant tech companies get rich off collecting and selling our personal data so we can be targeted, classified, and manipulated. The big rich companies do what all big rich companies do, get richer at the expense of the planet. The rise of the industrial age caused great pollution for the Earth's natural resources. The rise of the information age has and will continue to cause great pollution in the Earth's information and cyberspace(s).

It's inevitable.

Humans hunt and kill other animals for sport. Humans dump waste every where on this planet. Humans kill, injure and rape each other because of their personal "likes and dislikes" and / or "wants and needs"

Humans will destroy Earth because of human selfishness, ignorance and vast greed. There is zero doubt about it.

It's hardly all that bleak though. There's still hope. Humans can adapt. Will there be a lot of suffering before that happens? Probably.

Dr. Kaku agrees with you, Wentzel

Michio Kaku foretells humanity'''s extraordinary future

But for me, the guy typing these words now, I'm not so hopeful that humans have the time or even the political will to work together (and not against each other) to "right the ship" because on Earth, money and celebrity worship are the dominate forces over humans and humankind.

I see this everywhere I have been in every country (50+) I have travelled. Money, greed, consumerism, pollution, nationalism; and it has gotten worse in the past few years with the rise of populism and nationalism and many countries fueling the divisions between humankind with cyber influence operations. For me, I do not yet see light at the end of the tunnel in a world where the news media and consumers of news chase "any shiny object" for a few days until the next shiny object come along. For me, "hope" is not a realistic strategy or a workable plan.

I don't consider my thoughts on this "bleak" or "pessimistic", I'm just being realistic. Humans cannot continue to treat this planet as they have been and expect the planet to just "make it alright" again.

In my view, Human civilization in on 2019 Earth has been reduced to a media-driven "chasing shiny objects" world, like fish chasing after shiny object in the water. The future is not going to get better in the age of cyber influence operations, in my view, but I hope I am wrong. But based on what we have seen over the past three years, It's going to get a whole lot worse I think.

Celebrity worship, lifestyle of the rich and famous worship, greed, consumerism, populism, nationalism, racism .... there is no reason, in my mind, to think it's going to get better and humans are all going to wake up someday and reject their most basic nature and instincts we have seen for thousands of years and which we see everyday around the globe.

But, I hope I am wrong. But "hope" is not really a plan or a strategy.

Dr. Kaku is an optimist. I am a huge fan of his and listen to his audiobooks with great joy. Dr. Kaku believes humans will survive by leaving the planet in spaceships. His "backup plan" is Mars. That does not say very much for the future of the planet Earth. I admire Dr. Kaku's energy and optimism and I hope he is right; that the Earth will transition from a Type 0 civilization, to a Type 1 civilization in about 100 years. I hope he is right and he is much smarter than me!

Hi Neo...

Ha ha, he jests. We will never reach the goal of Kardashev's Type 1 Civilisation, let alone even thinking about his Type II or III, (Types 0, IV and V are modern extensions).

And the so-called Warp drive of StarTrek along with 'Beam Me Up Scotty' matter transfer is pure fiction.
One can't accelerate much outside the range of 0.9G to 1.1G for half the distance we need to travel, inter-stellar wise, as we would need to decelerate at the same amount for the final half, and our closest stellar neighbour is about 4.3 light years away so any SAFE and RELIABLE journey would take, erm, a LONG time.
And we haven't even got to inter-galactic REALISTIC travel methods.

As for matter transfer, how can one guarantee EVERY particle in any one body will return to its exact position on rebuild?
If there were Types I, II or III civilisations we would be able to detect them as they would make themselves easily _visible_/_measurable_.

Climate change will put paid to any idea of colonising a barren planet like Mars as huge global conflicts will occur as military nations grab what quick and easy resources remain.

Storing all of the energy on the host planet is worlds away, (no pun), from reality as we have a core and mantle with as much energy as we would ever need, and yet we have not harnessed it in any way seriously. This alone could help combat climate change but......
Science, engineering and geo-physics are one thing, human nature is something else.

Hey Wise,

Yes, I am on your side of the Dr. Kaku discussion.

When I read his novels, my mind perceives much (not all) of his ideas and concepts as science fiction; and actually very good science fiction.

In my view, the theory of moving toward a more advanced "Type 1" civilization is mired in problems related to the human condition, politics, religion and all the other countless ways humans have been divided as a species.

The worst enemy of humankind is humankind.

Hence, I place very strong odds that the humans on Earth will continue to kill animals for sport, pollute the planet, consume and exhaust the natural resource and make this planet a horrible place to live for future generations.

I think well intended and "optimistic" people like Dr. Kaku and others, with their shiny object discussions of escaping a doomed Earth to colonize Mars, while that might seem romantically appealing to some, I would prefer that humans focus on taking care of this planet Earth.

For me, I live on the seacoast (you know that, I guess) and I see people coming to visit everyday. They bring their mountains of garbage with them, and leave a lot of it in the sand and boardwalks to be swept into the sea, every day. They consume their alcohol and cook their food and drink and make themselves merry and have fun; and each one pollutes the planet without hesitation.

Even the beach dogs are more careful with their waste than the vast majority of humans enjoying the sea.

Having seen this every day for years, combined with all the greed, hero worship, human conflict, anger, hate, resentment, and intolerance we see globally in 2019, it's hard for me to believe that humans are going to "wake up" and stop destroying this beautiful, precious world we live on.

I realize that being an optimist like Dr. Kaku is a lot more popular than being a realist. Hence, people can live and be happy (and perhaps at peace with themselves) in "hope land" and "shiny object land" while our Earth is being consumed and destroyed by its most "intelligent" occupants.

Earth, I fear, is doomed to remain a "Type 0 Civilization", and will continue to consume all of Earth's natural resources and pollute the planet in ways we cannot yet image. This is especially true in light of the "cyber revolution" where the new battle space is the human mind; and this is a battle humans are destined to lose, because we are mostly powerless to stop the inevitable. The tech companies and indeed governments are convinced that "AI" will solve humankind's myriad problems. The cat is out of the bag, I am afraid.

Thanks for all of you participating here and welcome all others for sharing thoughts and emotions on this topic, even if not conforming to the majority of opinions here.

In terms of the M. Scott Peck(therapist, author) quote: "Emotional sickness is avoiding reality at any cost. Emotional health is facing reality at any cost." we're not that bad here. Everyone here seems to at least sense that there is a big problem here.

For my side I'm not a globetrotter myself. Not travelled much. Just reading and watching what's easy to get. And my view is the same as Neos in terms of the state of the planet: We treat the planet with unbelievable ignorance that our actions will ever have an effect. I think it's easy to get an overview of the current state of the planet by just googling around and on the other side it's in fact very difficult to ignore all unpleasant information about that passing by by accident.

Knowing is one part - Acting the other part. As the above mentioned author also said, "the greatest weakness of all humans is lazyness". (He used the word "original sin"). And a controverse person nowadays - the girl Greta Thunberg - said(whether it came out of herself or she heard it from others) "There are people with more guilt and others with less". Yes, I think that's the case. There are people that actively pushing for example fracking(pumping masses of extremely toxic chemicals into the ground), dumping nuclear wast just into the see, willingly try to enslave people through the use of AI, ... . That's indeed a big part of responsibility of a few here. But since we all know the crimes being done and know we are using the products(gasoline, food, electricity, ...) nevertheless, we have have a little share of responsibility ourselves. With some thousands people doing bad things in this world and some billions of the high industrialized countries silently acknowledging and supporting the action of the former, we see that the former would not get away with it or even economically survive without the laziness of the rest.

The lazyness from my side is: This whole thing is so big, I feel overwhelmed by it. What can I - this little human do? It's so ardous. I do not want to fight other people. There are so big instituions I feel so powerless against. I have enough tasks myself, I can not handle much more. I have to care about myself. Everyone has its only set of problems and is not enthused to get more.

Climate change is only one of the bullets approaching us. And it's not a quick one. But with every day passing by without actions the bullet is harder to avoid. At the moment we got the clarity that we got an average level of changes and impacts on our lives and on the production of the things we need. In about 10 years or so without action the game is over. We will no longer be able to handle things coming in about 20-100 years. Hunger, Violence, War.

We are in a comparatively good position of beeing able to push things forward. We have no lack of things of our needs in live. Everything is still there. We have spare time and a high level of freedom . For me the first thing in action is to get myself into action. And I call upon you, successful and highly intelligent people. Many of you accomplished so much in life. Incredible things. Things they may never have imagined they would. Will you take the challenge? If we fail so what? But if we didn't even try? What heritage do you like leave to our successors? Uhm, sorry about the mess we left to you!

The talk of XR talks about "virtue ethics". Do the right thing, even if there's no hope for change.

If masses of people change from serving profit to serving the change towards a life-supporting society, it will make a difference.

And it begins with me and you.

Update

Interestingly Frank Capra, the famous film directory(1897-1991) made a movie with warnings more than 60 years ago, stating the dangers clearly. Here's the one minute extract from the "unchained goddess(1958)" YouTube

Update II

The video on taxing co2 usage from wisecracker was very interesting and I think it will help. And I think it will need additional persuation for politicians to do it and citizens to accept it, too.

Hi Hicksd,

the algae-option was something that was reported on TV some time ago. Seems it's not that good, because if you want to achieve a considerable effect, you have to create masses of algae which would harm the existing ecosystem a lot. For the other things I'll have a closer look at. My intuition is that way that too much tech may not be the solution. But hey! Better look twice before throwing away a possible solution.

---

I saw a video of Allan Savory these days(YouTube). He's very enthusiastic about reversing desertification of land. After a major fail he got to a possible solution which helps with climate change to.

His theory for one reason for desertification(in areas with only partial humidity) is dry micro climate directly on the surface of the soil. Once there where many herds of wild animals, because a large herd can better defend against hunting packs of wolves for example than single animals or small groups. Even those large herds kept moving quickly to not get in danger of gathering hunting packs. So they grazed the lands intensely for a short period of time, moved on, came back a lot later to eat here again. So the vegetation can regenerate extensively between the use-cycles. The animals left their excrements, which was furtilizing the soil and they trampled down the grass. The trampled down grass covers the soil, so the water is held back within the soil and is not evaporating as it would be if uncovered. The trampled down grass is further dying, making room for the next generation of grass.

Since there are no longer large herds of wild animals due to excessive hunting of man, this process of conservation micro climate ceased to exist, and Savory thought about what can be done, to achive the same by maybe mimicking nature as it once was. So he had the idea of moving large flocks of livestock upon the living grasslands and got them moved on to other areas in a special rotation which imitates the original use.

It seems to work out very fine. The quality of the soil improved drastically. Some farms do not even need extra fertilizer to have the same crops as with fertilizer added. Knowledge is spreaded and some farmers begin to try it for themselves.

The method is interesting because it's really low tech. The movement is accomplished via electric fences, but can also done with manpower if the former tools are not available. Even in Africa there are projects to teach that knowledge to locals in order to transform desertification into prospering nature. The advantage for climate is that increased biomass binds co2 and get's it into the soil.(Layers of dead grass vegetation. Maybe the co2 of vegetation is released into the air, because of decay. Did not get all details so far.)

Update

Pleasant to see that Savorys idea(which seems to be originated in France in the 1950s) is spreading. I saw a talk from the austrian Beatrice Kehl(degree in landscape architecture) talking in a major german community project about her successful experiences on this method she made in great britain. A way of unterstanding nature and doing it right.

Indeed, these ideas are not so much an alternative, as additional necessary measures, since we are already beyond the point where reducing CO2 emissions would be sufficient. So just green energy - though very necessary - is not going to cut it by itself, we need to actively remove CO2 from the atmosphere and/or cool the planet by introducing reflective properties.

Hi again,

I'm asking wether it happens, if I annoy you all, with writing on the topic but better having tried than to do nothing at all.

I just got attention to a person living near my home town in Hammelburg/Germany: Hans-Josef Fell. Knowing him very long, he's a very radical politician of the german greens bringing his vision 100% renewable energies into the world. He said that he did not dream about that, he is doing it. For example in his private house. Fully autonomous/renewable in terms of energy. He had his electric "car" (a TWIKE back then, 1994?) before their producer officially sold it.

He was person bringing the Renewable Energy Sources Act into Reality, enabling profits with investments in renewable energies, which were massively boosted therefore. The act was taken down again by other political parties. But it's too late. The world saw what had happend. The act was copied by over 100 other countries, especially China!

In 2006 he founded the Energy Watch Group for looking at the fossil resources, the coming shortage and the possible massive change to renewables. He serves as the organizations president. It's network of politicians and scientists who want are willing to drive the change. Currently the organization publicated a detailed study for 100% renewable Energy in Europe. It's possible. It's a lot of work, but there's no magic needed at all. The tech is there. Will to do it is the only thing that's needed. We're over the peak of oil. In the next few years there's a rising gap in the supply of fuel, which is even admitted by those who fought viciously against a change away from oil.

Further I saw him in a trailer to Climate Warriors: YouTube (Cool: Terminator is Riding a Bike!) He's truly a climate warrior, I'm absolutely proud of!

He calls for all people to start to engage. Grassroots movement. Australias goverment is actively turning against climate protection. But the people are very different. Due to the activities and investments of the people Australia is making most progress in the world. The situation seems to be similar in the U. S.

Everybody's needed!

Regards,
stomp

Update

Fell mentioned that Warren Buffet, 3rd richest man abandoned investments of esso and another fossil fuel org and heads energy investments towards renewables. This is the beginning of the end of fossil energy generation.(the interview is from last year)

Nigeria is planning to build a one Gigawatts Solar Plant.

Fell is very excited what massive changes are going on in the renewable world. The only question for him is, if mankind is fast enough to stop the climate change bullet(my wording).

Dear Stomp,

It's great to have people with passion and energy for whatever interests them.

My wonderful partner in life, she recycles everything she can and we take that to a recycling center every month or so. She even got back about $3 dollars last time, and she was thrilled in a fun sort of way, trading what would have been bags of garbage for a few bucks and helping the planet at the same time.

However, on the darker side ...

Two days ago someone secretly dumped tens of thousands of gallons of some black goop into a drain pipe at night and that black, toxic goop flowed from that pipe directly into the sea.

Every weekend, hoards of people come down to the beach near our home and sit on their bamboo mats, drink their whisky, cook with clay pots, eat, consume and destroy the beach and the sidewalks.

Where I live, frankly speaking, the stray beach dogs are cleaner than the vast majority of the tourists. Imagine that! Stray beach dogs are cleaner than the hoards of tourists!

As mentioned earlier, as someone who has travelled to over 50 countries, and have scuba dived around 1,000 times in maybe five or six countries, I can tell you that humans will destroy a huge, beautiful coral reef in a matter of days, weeks or months just to get their groups of paying tourists to sit on an island beach for the day.

I have seen boat loads of tourists standing on coral reefs, boat anchors ripping reefs apart, you name it.

If you are really into making a difference, I would encourage you to make some great YT videos because the young generation are all about video and media. If you have great ideas you want to share, causes you want to address, wrongs you want to right, you will reach a much wider audience on YouTube than on unix.com. Of course, you are welcome to post here as well.

Maybe you can go to VideoBlocks and download some global warming and pollution video footage, use Camtasia, Final Cut or Premier Pro and make a video or maybe even make many videos.

Personally, I am just getting into video media, professional stock video footage, special effect and video production, and it's really amazing what is available to work with in 2019.

The sky is the limit and you can easily have your own "Global News Channel" with amazing videos.

Video media is "where it's at" these days.

Hey Neo,

thanks for showing appreciation for my post. Nice to see, that what I write is interesting at least for one person. Thanks for caring for earth to you and your partner!

Yes, I can imagine how disturbing, how frustrating and how painfully that may be for you seeing people in ignorance for the environment just dumping everything leaving a mess whereever they are. From small to planetary scale.

What's regarding the things to do(video): I'm on my way to find my path. I take the tip with making videos with me, but I at the moment I'm already drowning in the overcomplexity of IT, and so that's not my primary path of action.

---

Thought on mobility:

Actually here in germany big hype in terms of electrified mobility. I think albeit this may work in the little lands of Europe it will be far less important in a country like the USA with its vast distances. Probably hydrogen based propulsions with its increased energy concentration may fit better here. Are there any attempts noticable in this direction?

Regards,
stomp

Regarding that, I plan to do a small segment in my next video on Cyber Dystopia by pointing out that humans polluting cyberspace in the information age is a natural extension to the same human behavior that polluted the planet in the industrial age.

In other words, it does not matter if it is the physical spaces on Earth (the land, air, sea and outer space around Earth), or the cyberspaces on Earth (social media, networks, Internet, our cognitive mental spaces), human greed, hatred, and divisive self-destructive human nature and attraction to sensuality and materialism will pollute and destroy all around us.

So, as people are rightfully consumed with the real and present danger of global pollution and climate change, there is also a very real and present danger in cyberspace. They are different sides of the same coin we call "human nature".

Even if you could save the physical resources on Earth, human society is destined for dystopia due to cyberspace pollution, influence operations, propaganda, human targeting (some call this "personalization") and AI as a way to debase the human condition.

In other words, when a world has decided that machines can do things better than humans, and actively work to obsolete humans for those tasks, the cast has already been set. Pandora's box has been opened.

Even if human society can reverse climate change (which I have already stated I do not think, personally speaking, it is reversible based on well-established historical human nature on a global scale), it is unlikely that human society will reverse the shift in human society where cyberspace is weaponized and cyber used against each other (humans v. humans, machines v. humans, even machines v. machines) in ways we cannot even being to imagine today.

Just look at Boeing and their AI system for flight control. That system was put in place and most pilots were not even told about it because Boeing and the civil aviation authorities considered it "not cost effective" or necessary to train the human pilots on Boeing's MCAS system correctly. Then, two Boeing planes crashed because of MCAS, both under the control of the machine (the AI) and many humans lives were lost. This is what happens when corporations put profit and machines above passengers and pilots. They believe that humans cannot fly the plane as well has machines, and so they put the "AI" in control and humans could not override. Still, Boeing makes planes and tweaks their AI. Boeing executives retired and become "the inspectors" and the cycle of human greed and destruction continues. There are countless AI-related mishaps occurring every day which we never see or hear about, some huge like Boeing's MCAS system (which we finally heard about), some small, like Facebook targeting "haters" with "hate messages" for profit.

The problem is greed, especially corporate greed and of course materialism, consumerism and sensualism (sensationalism). Humans are unlikely to move past this stage in their evolutionary journey and are on a clear path toward self-destruction.

No amount of tech push for "green energy" or "pollution eating algae" can compensate for human greed.

It's really self-evident, I think.

PS: And I am an optimist..... but I am "realistic optimist".

Hi Neo...

This does not just apply to current technology, remember the first commercial jet airliner? The "de Havilland Comet". This was a technological achievement in its own right but.......
........the "unknown unknowns" reared its ugly head because the manufacturers "knew better".

However, in my opinion, as mass migrations occur due to loss of land mass this will bring forth a huge rise in nations becoming insular and with it the violent extremes of "all sides" willing to __exterminate__ those trying to edge in on their space, using their food, water and resources.

This will in turn bring the major powers into conflict with each other as alliances start to break apart which could culminate in mass extinctions on a global scale within weeks or months especially with those powers that have nuclear weapons. We are already seeing this with the nation with the largest arsenal in human history flexing its muscles again under the auspices of the [Far] Right Wing in power.

I suspect these scenarios could come far more quickly than an entire global _melt_ down of the polar ice caps...

Maybe I am a pessimist but I fear for my 2.5 year old grandson as he has to face this[these] scenario [s]sooner or later, but it might be too late now let alone in a little over a decade's time...
