Cannot boot from CDROM nor get to OK prompt SunV210

Server need to have the OS reinstalled (5.10 SPARC) and I cannot get it to the OK prompt. I also do not have the ALOM password and I've tried several different methods to zero out the NVRAM but to no avail. There is no ALOM battery that I can pull. I'm connecting via Cutecom (like minicom) and serial cable from my Linux box.

I would sincerely appreciate any and all suggestions.

If you can boot from the hard drive(s) you should be able to use scadm to reset ALOM and eeprom to set OBP.

Have you tried to boot without hard drive(s) installed? If so- what happened?

Forgot to add, I don't have any passwords to the accounts. Going to try booting w/out hard drives.

use comand scadm from Solaris

# scadm usershow
# scadm userperm username perms
# scadm userpassword username

How can I use scadm without a valid username/password and no access to the ALOM?

Pulled the hard drives and booted. Nothing came of it. Below is the result of me trying to enter a break (~#). scadm won't work at this level; I've tried.

Please login: ~#
Please Enter password: **

Invalid login.
Please login:

Serial line login timeout, returns to console stream.

Enter #. to return to ALOM.

can you elaborate on the cdrom thing? when you power down the system, put in a cd and power up, you can't get it to boot off cd? i take it the system auto-boots from disk?

That's exactly it. Frustrating.

OK, past the ALOM password issue. I sat there and guessed passwords for an hour and found it

Now I'm at the sc prompt and enter poweron so that I can get to console and the ok prompt. I can't get past it attempting to poweron and looping as seen below:

From ALOM use the 'break' command to send a break during the OS boot process. That will drop you at the OK prompt. It will not work reliably during POST or OBP load, you must wait for the system to start trying to boot the OS.

Some useful stuff available at, Solaris FAQ / HOWTO [Unix/Linux systems administrator's handbook]

I'm not sure if just typing break works (never tried it), but you can try it this way:

set /HOST send_break_action=break

You can always disable autoboot from the ALOM:

set /HOST/bootmode script="setenv auto-boot? false"

Still crashing incessantly and rebooting when I go to console. Tried everything suggested so far, cannot get to OK prompt. I appreciate the help so far.

Here's what happens when I try to send a break from the sc prompt and then attempt to get to the OK prompt. Nothing but endless reboots.

sc> break

Just cannot get to an OK prompt no matter what. So I also cannot get the box to boot from CDROM.

From ALOM try this:

bootmode bootscript="-s cdrom"

You will need to see the console and switch to ALOM before you sendbreak, at least with some estimation. You cant break when the system is doing probe tests..

The system does probe tests and then reboots endlessly.

Maybe you have bigger issues, like dead or faulty hardware. try to check the hardware from the SC. I believe "showfaults" or "showfaults -v" is the first thing to look at. Also try to boot without the harddrive and a cd in there.

OK, I am still stumped. 2 V210s with the same problem. Removing the hard drives and attempting to boot to the DVDROM with the Solaris 10 DVD in there and not in there results in:

Can't open boot device

I also tried swapping DVDROMs and resetting the NVRAM.

If you were on the ttya serial port for the console you can send a ~~# to emulate a <STOP>+<A> to take the machine down to the ok> prompt, perhaps the same would work via the ALOM console?

At the ok> prompt, set auto-boot option to false.
do a reset-all and try again. V210s zzzzzzzz.... I onced hit problem with a DVD and was able to use it after a firmware upgrade. By the, were you able to probe?

probe what? What should I try?

Run:

probe-ide

at the okay prompt, see:

I have experienced Sun V880s which would not boot from a DVD-RW disc, had to use a DVD-R(or DVD+R but not DVD+RW if you see what I mean!), presumably if a frimware upgrade were available for the DVD-ROM drive that might be fixed..
