Build Linux Desktop ?

Hi,

Just trying to make a plan as to if this doable or not? Currently in the company all the desktop are Windows, users get MS-Word, some kind of Virus program. and all connected to Windows domain.

If I want to do the same thiing on Linux? How would I do that? First I need to create some kiind of ISO image so I can build the server fast like Windows guy. Push to each Linux user desktop.

Any one doing this in their company? Please advise.

Good luck!

The hard bit will be integrating your linux world into Window domain because I suppose you are using Active directory no? and if like our site you have firewalls and DNS etc all microsoft you will quickly realize what I mean... Now the good side : I deal with true unixes, they are almost impossible to join in a windows domain by easy ways ( and even by complicated...) This is not the case with linux, look out there are plenty of documentation on this e.g:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ActiveDirectoryWinbindHowto
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Samba/Kerberos
Configuration of the /etc/smb.conf file

In one of my last projects i had to use MS-software. I ended up saving an image of the preinstalled Windows from the Laptop, installed Fedora, installed Virtual Box, then fed the Virtual Box the image file of the disk as virtual hard disk.

This way i had an original company-compliant machine (virtual) and still a working environment. I have zero tolerance when i am expected to work on a daily basis from Putty sessions or similar nonsense.

I hope this helps.

Try zentyal, it is based on ubuntu and, amongst other things, it can act as a pdc for windows clients and also put a linux os to thin clients on the lan

Zentyal - The Linux Small Business Server

Ps stay away from version 3 as it is still very buggy
