Boot interaction

Hi All,

I am the new boy on the Block with HP-UX.

To get to the point, I have a Hp-ux (C200) workstation running on Hp-ux 11.x Operating System. A week ago when practicing on file access permission, I have set the permission on a directory (perhaps a file I am not sure) to 0544 and did some other practices and then turned the machine off with shutdown -yh 0.

When next day I powered up my machine and wanted to login as a root through CDE, I got this message:

"account locked in the commercial security database"

I tried to interrupt the boot process (to interact with ISL ) by hitting the Esc key soon after turning the power ON, but I can not interrupt the boot process.

I turn power ON, kernel gets loaded, CDE appears ready to login.

Every time I login as root, I get the above message. I do not know what to do. To make the matter worth my system is a trusted system and am not able to log in as single user either.

Can anyone help me with this please?

Many thanks.

M.H

Are you able to access the system at all ?

Or is it only as root your unable to access ?

Try changing the root password ?!? Thats assuming your able to get a ssh session on it mind you!

found these, google.com is a wonderful search engine!

Hi Plimpix,

Thanks for your kind reply.

My Machine is not Networked. Just a work station (c200 HP-UX 9000 running on OS 11i).
As mentioned in my previous Thread, I am having difficulty interruping the Boot Proocess soon after powering up my mchine by using the "Esc" key.

I am hoping to break up the Boot Process so that I can login as a none root and to change the root password, perhaps to resolve this and not to get the messge below when I login as a root through the CDE:

"account locked in the commercial security database"

Currently, I turn power ON, kernel gets loaded, CDE appears ready to login and when I do login as a root I get the above message.

I will look at the links you mentioned, but will be a very happy man if I could stop the Kernel loading soon after poweing up my machine.

Hope this help you and the good people out there for suggesting a solutions.

Cheers

if u realy want to stop boot sequence, and not able to stop it by escape key then try it.

disconnect the bootable device (Physically).

when the box will unable to find the bootable device, it halts on
MA>
connect the device.
try the command.
MA>sea
MA> boot P0(or which is ur bootable device) isl
ISL> hpux -is
then the box goes in single user mod and change ur settings what u want.

Awadhesh

Hi Awadhesh,

Thanks for your reply and suggestion.

"disconnect the bootable device (Physically)".

How this is done as I am new with HP-UX?

I must say that, I pulled out the casing, which holds the hard disk/cdrom/floppy drive (front panel) and had a good look but could not fathom out, how I could do a physical disconnect.

I would be ever so thankful, if you could please elaborate and the steps I need to take so that I am able to get to MA> prompt.

Once again many thanks for your time and those who would be showing an interest in my problem.

Cheers

Ok not sure if macs are built the same as PC's but if you want to DC the bootable device take off the side panel and pull out the i think its the IDE cable cable that goes from the motherboard to the bootable device. The cable is a thin cable that has a long width and could also connect to the floppy drive. Not sure if im correct but its worth a try

If the boot device is a SCSI drive, it probably is, just pull the terminator from the end of the bus, usually on the SCSI header on the back pannel. Doing this will render the whole bus in opperable untill you put the terminator back on.

You must not have read the pages that plimpix linked in the second article in this thread. I thought that was good information. So I get the feeling that you won't read my links either. :frowning:

Oh well, in case anyone is interested, the HP web site has HP Visualize c200 Workstation Manuals (guides, supplements, addendums, etc) which has a complete set of manuals including Model C160 / C180 / C200 / C240 Owner's Guide which describes how to replace the disk drive.

Hi Corrail,

Many thanks for your suggestion and your interest in my problem.

Having read what you recommended, I pulled out the casing, which holds hard disk, cdrom and floppy drive (front panel) and I seen tow ribbons one a grey (bluish) colour wide with two rows of 25 hols at one end with a little tag saying single ended scsi - drive connected to the disk drive and the end way saying single ended scsi - disk interface board.

I pulled this ribbon off and powered up the machine and to my surprise kernel was loaded as usual CDE appeared and ready to login. On this ribbon was written:

LL31941 CSA AWM I A 105C 300V FT-1

The second ribbon, a narrow one and whit colour and written on it:

20297 CSA AWM I A 105C 150 FT-1 SPECTRA-STRIP FAST 20/40 -SCSI RL AWM STYLE.

I don not know how to locate the IDE cable, but will I be looking in the motherboard tomorrow as it's now half past one in the morning at my neck of wood.

Please if you can shed some light as to how I can locate this IDE cable and furthermore by disconnecting this cable, would I be able to power up this machine and get to the MA> prompt as was suggest by our friend Awadhesh?

Once again many thanks for your time and all others who will be showing an interest.

go to link
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/lpv37955/lpv37955.pdf

Find the h/w manual, or just try to unplug the disk (if many disconnect all) and recycle the power.
when system boots it searches for bootable device, when it will not find this device it halts on MA> prompt.

u can take help of some other experinced H/W engr to do this activity.

Cheers,

Awadhesh

Awadhesh and Perderabo,

My thanks to both of you for sending me the link and your suggestion.

I spent a grate deal of time today, reading the HP Visualize c200 Workstation Manuals and must say did not find an indication as to how and where (in storage tray assembly or in main tray assembly) unplugging the disk.

Furthermore, I am not clear with recycle power notion, do you mean:
A - unplug the disk while power is off (provided if I can locate & identify connector)
B - turn the power on to allow searching for bootable device and getting to MA> prompt and then do the SEA and the rest?

It is a bit hard if you do not know what is where but I must admit I found the link very interesting.

I posted a thread to Corrail and I do not know if any of you had time to look at it. Please take a look at it. It might help you to help me with my approach for resolving this problem.

Once again many thanks for your time and all others who will be showing an interest.

Recycle the power means poweroff and on of the Server, check ur keyboard for faulty escape key also.

Awadhesh

Hi Awadhesh,

Thanks for your response on "power recycle". But in my message I was more concerned with the correctness of the sequence after finding out how to physically disconnect the bootable device.

Although, I am thankful for the response from you and all others, but I still do not know where to look in main tray assembly or in storage tray assembly and disconnect the Hard disk, if this is, what to be done in order to get to MA> prompt as you are suggesting.

As I mentioned, I my firs thread, I am new with HP-UX and therefore I am having this difficulty. I feel, I only can resolve this to get a set of instruction (step by step approach) indicating exactly where to look and what to do. Is it possible that you provide me with the instruction? I have already checked the Esc Key. It is fine.

Well, thanks again for responding to my mail and I look forward to hearing from you again hopefully this time with a set of instructions that would help me resolving this problem.

Cheers

Hi Perderabo,

As you are aware, I am having a problem with my HP-UX 200c workstation, (cannot interrupt the boot process) and asked for help. So far I posted 5 threads and number of people including you kindly responded with suggestion and in some cases provided me with some links. Although I found these links very useful, but regretfully, cannot find the answer that I am looking for and to resolve this problem. As mentioned in one of my positing to Awadhesh, I only can tackle this, if I am provided with a clear instruction (step by step) as I am new with HP hardware and to some extent also with software.

I noticed that you are quite active on the forums and helping others. Is it possible to send me a clear instruction (a favour) so that I can interact with the boot process and be able to use my machine?

Once again many thanks for your help and those who will be showing an interest

Regards,

M.A

I have never even seen a c200 workstation. I mostly work with servers. I have no way to write my own procedure for you. All I can do is point to the manual.

Perderabo,

Thank you, for the quick response. The manuals and the links so far, I have read and looked are not giving the clue as to what do and where to look for interrupting the boot process. All I know, to stop the kernel from loading is by hitting the Esc key soon after powering ON the machine.

Well, once again thanks for the reply. Hopefully, one of these days some one will send the exact information that I need for resolving my problem and being able to have the use of my machine.

Regards,

M.H

M.H.

Actually the same problem with me as Perderabo, i also never seen this workstation. Pls take help of some hardware engineer to disconnect the disk. or remove all disks from workstaition, u have to identify all parts of ur workstation.

Awadhesh

Awadhesh Hi,

Thank you very much for the response and your concern.

With regard to identification of the parts, I can identify them OK, thanks to you and Perderabo for sending me the links. But I am having difficulty disconnecting and removing the hard disk from the workstation as you have suggested.

As mentioned in one of my pervious threads, I have disconnected a wide 25-pin whole grey/bluish ribbon (I though I disconnected the hard disk) but when powered ON the machine, it booted and went all the way to CDE asking for login ID.

There was another ribbon (white and narrow) looks a bit complicated and I was not sure for touching that, therefore I sent you a mail describing both ribbons and was looking to receive some advise on them.

Really, I do not know who is a Hardware Engineer as such on the Forum. But I am hoping one day someone to send me a clear instruction to resolve this.

Regards,

M.H

Hi Awadhesh

I have disconnected the hard disk by pulling out, this time the white narrow ribbon. It was interesting, because it could not find a bootable device. It did not go to the MA> prompt as you suspected/suggested, but it came up with the menu below:

... Main Menu........................
Command
-------------
BOot [PRI | ALT | <path>]
PAth [PRI | ALT | CON | KEY] [<path>]
SEArch [DISPLAY | IPL]
Help .....................
Main menu: Enter command >

I then entered the following command:

Main menu: Enter command > BO
Interact with ILP: (Y, N, Q) Y

Booting ............
Cannot find ENTRY_TEST
Failed to initialise

It looked for the Primary Boot Path, which is FWSCSI.5.0 and the Alternative Boot Path, which FWSCSI.6.0, Obviously, could not find the correct Path and I got the error message Failed to initialise and the Main Menu appeared again like one below

... Main Menu........................
Command
-------------
BOot [PRI | ALT | <path>]
PAth [PRI | ALT | CON | KEY] [<path>]
SEArch [DISPLAY | IPL]
Help .....................
Main menu: Enter command >

Having gotten the error message, when I reconnected the white ribbon (hard disc) and turned the power on, it booted with no problem and went all the way to CDE.

I would like to add that, you get the Main Menu by pressing the Esc key if you wish to interrupt the Boot Process and as you are aware, I am not able to interrupt the Boot Process when I hit the Esc key soon after powering up.

With the information that I have now provided, is there something else that we can try to resolve this?

Once again, many thanks for your time
